Spring Activities In Fernie
Nestled in the Canadian Rockies, under the serene watch of Mount Fernie and the Three Sisters, the Elk Valley is well-known as a skiing and snowboarding hotspot. And we won’t argue that there isn’t a better place to spend part of the Fernie winter than The Qanuk, our lovely ski-in, ski-out lodge.
But when the snows begin to recede and the wildflowers bloom, our laid back little paradise becomes a gateway to so much more than skiing. Book The Qanuk in the spring and step into a world of outdoor excitement and things to do in Fernie, like hiking, white water rafting, hot springs, and more!

More Than Just a Ski Town
Even after the snow’s gone, there are plenty of great things to do in the Fernie area. At The Qanuk, you can still step right outside your front door and catch the Deer Chair ski lift to access miles upon miles of biking trails that weave across the peaks and bowls of the mountains. You can bring your bike or you can rent one in Fernie. The trails are ranked as beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert only. Mountain biking season usually kicks off in late April and extends to the end of October—right about the time the fat biking season begins. Fernie is a mountain biking mecca, so don’t be surprised if you’re far from the only one on the trail!
After a full day, you can ride back to The Qanuk for a shower, and perhaps a game of pool or foosball before heading off to explore the restaurants, the brewery, and other hot spots in Fernie’s historic downtown. Chances are good the peaks will still be capped with snow, so you can finish the evening with a soothing soak in the hot tub as you take in the gorgeous view and plan for the next day. Or, if an all-natural hot tub is more your style, you can make a day trip to the Lussier or Ram Creek Hot Springs north of Fernie.
If you’d prefer a gentler approach to your stay at The Qanuk, you can ride the lifts up the slopes for scenic hiking among the Fernie area’s beautiful alpine landscape. You might even see a moose from the lift! At the top, you have your choice of difficulty levels for your hike.
For a purely relaxing adventure, you can canoe or paddleboard Maiden Lake right in town—or any of the many other lakes in the surrounding mountains—or you can enjoy an easy float down the Elk River from the North Fernie Bridge to the boat launch at Dogwood Park.
When you’re ready to give your mind and body a break from the stiffness of work and routine, take a quick jaunt through Crowsnest Pass and emerge into a world that will satisfy your spirit and soul. No matter what season it is, there are plenty of great things to do in Fernie. Book your extended stay at the Qanuk today—you deserve it!
